I’m very excited to share that my flash fiction piece “The Last Birthday Cake” was published in the June issue of Luna Station Quarterly! I wrote the piece during a Clarion West flash fiction workshop (more on that, here). The inspiration for the piece came on a slow, vertigo-plagued walk around my neighborhood. I was having a bad vestibular migraine in the middle of several years of bad vestibular migraines. The day was beautiful, and I was searching my upside-down brain for something that felt constant. Something I could rely on.
The only thing I could come up with is gravity.
And since I’m a fiction writer, I began imagining what would happen if gravity suddenly failed us.
I’ve had several more flash fiction pieces out for submission for the last six months to a year, and I’ve got a proud stack of rejections for those. Somehow, for this piece, Luna Station was the first place I submitted. To get an acceptance on the first round made it all the more special.
